Sunshine Foundation Event – On-site printing with Green Screen

The Sunshine Foundation is a wonderful organization that makes dreams happen for kids with disabilities. I was very happy to be chosen as the photographer for their recent event. A great idea for any event, whether it’s corporate or a wedding, is to have a studio set up at the location and provide on-site printing. Guests, who are usually dressed to the nines, love having a professional picture taken of themselves that is printed out within 15 minutes and presented to them in either a frame or a folder. When a green screen is incorporated then the fun factor is ramped up, as you can tell from the pictures below.

What Should You Be Paying for Wedding Photography?

The Wedding Photography is arguably the most important element of the entire wedding, especially after the fact. That being the case, how much should you spend and what is the relationship between price and quality?

So, you’ve been to a bunch of Wedding Photography websites and wow is it ever confusing. Sometimes it seems like every Tom, Dick & Harry has bought a digital camera, set-up a website and is offering to photograph one of the most important days of your life. Often the pictures look pretty good as does the website (even though it’s probably a $100 template site). And pricing is extremely reasonable, going as low as $1000 for full day coverage.

Firstly, don’t be enamored with a photographer solely based on seeing the pictures in the Wedding Gallery on their site. Needless to say, these galleries will showcase their best work, which means the best pix from each wedding. The reality is that anyone, including guests, can take a few good pictures at a wedding, even with a point and shoot. Therefore, to get a proper idea of a photographer’s skill and style ask to see a couple of entire weddings – 400 pictures from the same wedding will be very revealing.

Depending on where you live, the average price for an experienced photographer might be around $2500 for a full-day. So, what can you realistically expect from an inexperienced photographer who might have photographed less than 20 weddings and is charging around $1000? That’s not an easy question to answer. There are some very talented up-and-coming photographers who because they are early into their careers offer an amazing value for the work they do. But these photographers are in the minority. Wedding Photography is very challenging. Experience counts and there are no redoes. It requires great interpersonal skills (some photographers should only take pictures of objects). It requires an understanding of timing and logistics as they relate to the particular wedding at hand. And while many artistic photographers poopoo/denigrate wedding photography it requires the most skill, often on the fly. A Professional Wedding Photographer will also have back-up equipment in case things go wrong – many amateurs do not, which his scary indeed.

All of this is not to say that by paying more to someone whose been around for a while you’re guaranteed to get great pictures. On the contrary, it’s best to do your homework. Go on forums and see if anyone is saying anything about the wedding photographer(s) you’re interested in. You’ll read some disturbing and/or crazy stories about the photographer drinking on the job, interrupting the ceremony to ask the officiant to do something again, hitting on bridesmaids, etc. Do your due diligence.

Meanwhile, in this day and age of difficult economic times it’s easy to pay less for wedding photography, but keep in mind that all you have after the wedding are the pictures (and maybe video). You might be better served trimming from other areas, such as flowers, which only a small percentage of people will notice or care about – or the DJ (unless you’re getting something very special, most wedding DJs sound the same. Their get-up may look nicer, but they invariably play the same songs.)

In conclusion, if you’re a bit of a gambler, you’re on a tight budget and you’ve really checked things out, a cheaper photographer may work out just fine. More often than not though, the axiom/adage, “you get what you pay for”, usually applies to wedding photography. So, if it’s in the budget, do plenty of research, get some recommendations and pay extra to get a professional. It’ll be worth it.

Borders For Your Pictures Using Photoshop 101

Using borders will surely enhance the picture you want to highlight. It is a fact that web graphic designers use borders to the maximum for a more effective picture. But you don’t need to be a professional graphic designer to make cool borders. With the help of Photoshop, you will be able to make your own borders. Read on to find out how to create lovely designed photographs.

Opt for the best border that will enhance the picture. Pick what kind of border you want and then place it around your picture. If you want to create a border around the entire image, click “Select All”.

To modify your border just click on Select menu. To edit your border click on edit and “stroke” . From there, you can choose the width which is in pixel size, color and other things you want to edit. Click on “Color Picker” to choose which color you want.

The location of your border is the next thing you need to decide on. This can be determined by the marquee tool you used in the first step. Choosing “inside” will place the border inside the marquee line. When placing borders “Outside,” the border needs to be placed on the boundary of the marquee line.

Last but not the least, you need to select the mode and the opacity you would want to have for the photograph you desire. And after that, you have to click on the “Ok” button so that you can take a look at the finished border which you have selected. If you do not like the border which you have created, you can always go back and start over again from the beginning. As soon as you are finished, you need to save the picture you have edited.

Placing borders on your picture using Photoshop is something which can be achieved in a few minutes. You have already learned how to design and add borders to your pictures. Of course, since you are able to achieve that in a few minutes, there is no need for you to ask for the help of some professional graphics designer.

Event Photography for Certiport

Last week I was hired by an American Company, Certiport, to photograph their annual Gala Event in Toronto (thank you to the organic side of Google). I didn’t know what it was all about but at the very least it was a chance to try out my glorious new camera, the Nikon D700, (un)arguably the best digital SLR ever made (more on that in another post – suffice to say, it’s incredible).

It turned out to be a pretty cool event. Certiport, in association with Microsoft and Adobe, creates software designed to bring standardized Digital Literacy to the world. They have a global competition every year (80,000 young people participated this year) to encourage kids all over, including in many less developed nations, to become profficient at Microsoft Word and Excel. The best of the best are flown every year to the Gala Event weekend (next year to be held in a swanky resort in Puerto Rico) where a final competition is held to find the fastest and most accurate kids. Every kid received a medal but special attention was given to four winners from Hong Kong and Thailand. So, that was pretty cool.

The next part of the evening was dedicated to honouring individuals from around the world who use Centiport’s software to introduce and spread Digital Literacy as far and wide as possible, especially with respect to lower income people who would normally not have access to computers. The winner of the ‘Inspiration Award’ was a Libyan business man, Khaled El Hamedi, who, to date, has helped train and certify more than 30,000 public and private workers in his country.

Now corporate events can be somewhat bland but the highlight of the night was keynote speaker, John Herrington, former NASA Astronaut. Using his own fascinating life as an example, he spoke about the importance of challenge and inspiration in finding our calling. He spoke eloquently and from the heart about his trials and tribulations and he showed a video of his experience on the Space Shuttle and his walk outside the Space Station. Incidentally, Herrington is also of Chickasaw Indian descent, which he was very proud of. Being the adventurer he is, when a medical condition prevented him from ever flying into space again, he embarked on a 4,000-mile bicycle ride from Cape Flattery, WA to Cape Canaveral, FL, beginning in mid-August 2008 designed to encourage student participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). I was very happy to have heard him speak.
