Maternity Photography – Beautiful Bellies.

I’ve been doing a lot of maternity and baby photography in the last year, which I have enjoyed immensely. There is little as beautiful as a pregnant woman. And what is there in life that comes close to matching the glory of childbirth? Nothing if you ask me (I had my first child 19 months ago and the only thing I can think of that might compete with the creation of life itself is attaining enlightenment. And as someone once said, “If you think you’re enlightened, go spend a week with your family”. )

Every pregnant woman should know how glorious she is, and, if possible, should have a visual record of a magical time filled with hope and anticipation.

As you can see from my images, I don’t do studio work. It’s just never appealed to me. Studio shots can look spectacular in the hands of a good photographer, but sometimes it feels to me like there’s something missing. Technically beautiful, but maybe lacking the soul that comes with either being in nature, or in your home environment. While you will get ‘perfect’ lighting every time in a studio, you are limited in your movement, which can stifle spontaneity and creativity. And while most studio work has a similar feel to it, there is a uniqueness and warmth that comes when the backdrop for your maternity pictures is your home.

Granted, some homes have their own limitations, especially for someone who shoots primarily with natural light, but I always end up capturing enduring images. After all, where do we feel most comfortable? In our own home – the haven which your baby will soon share with you. And when we feel safe and relaxed we are more present – more real. We take better pictures.

I like entering a home photography session without preconceived ideas and a shot list. Of course, there are staple shots that I am usually looking to get, but mine is the organic, fluid approach which embraces discovery, not only with respect to the home, but especially with the expectant couple. Because in the end, the most important element in good portrait photography is the relationship that is forged in a short time between photographer and client. And for me, that aspect of my job might be the most enjoyable.
